Sherando Park in Stephens City, Virginia offers a little bit of everything — quiet roads, shaded trails, open fields, and even a splash of history. Just a few miles south of Winchester, this Frederick County park is a runner’s dream, with options for both road and trail enthusiasts. Whether you’re chasing weekly mileage, mixing up training surfaces, or just enjoying the scenery, Sherando has you covered. Situated on 330 scenic acres, Sherando Park offers a variety of activities and facilities for the enjoyment of the entire family. The park is located 1.8 miles east of I-81 on Route 277 at Stephens City.

Paved Roads for Smooth Miles

The park’s paved road network offers a safe, low-traffic option for runners who prefer steady footing. The main park roads wind past ballfields, playgrounds, and open grassy areas, making it easy to string together a few loops for tempo runs or easy recovery days. With gentle hills and long stretches of straight pavement, you can work on speed or just enjoy a stress-free jog. The loop around the park’s central section is especially popular with runners looking for a consistent workout spot close to town.

Trails for Adventure and Variety

If you’re craving a change of scenery, Sherando’s trail system takes you off the asphalt and into the woods. Designed for both hikers and mountain bikers, these trails double beautifully for trail running. Expect a mix of rolling singletrack, wider dirt paths, and short climbs that will test your legs in all the right ways. The shaded canopy keeps things cooler in the summer, while the fall foliage makes for an unforgettable run.

Main Park Side

On the side of the park where Sherando High School and the Sherando Pool sits, you will find the hiking trails. Signs are positioned along trails to indicate the trail being walked and
the distance. Trees along designated trails will periodically have a colored disc painted on them to indicate the current trail being used. All trails are circular and will return users to their original starting point.

BLUE TRAIL – 1.2 Miles
GREEN TRAIL – .4 Miles
RED TRAIL – .8 Miles

Parking is available in parking lots adjacent to the pool area, Locke Gazebo, Lions Shelter, and Abex Shelter.

Sherando North and Northwest (Warrior Drive)

The Sherando Mountain Bike Trails can be accessed from the parking lot on the North Side where the softball fields are or from the Warrior Drive parking area. The trails are marked A through G and cover close to five miles. A bit more technical than the hiking trails, these routes will challenge you without having to venture far from Winchester to get some good trail running in.
